Silicon Optical Bench (SiOB)

What is Silicon Optical Bench? (SiOB)

Norcada's Silicon Optical Bench (or SiOB) uses silicon as the packaging platform to allow users to build miniature optical subsystems on one silicon chip. These units enable the user to design systems similar to integrated optical units.

Norcada designs and fabricates silicon optical benches (SiOB) for a number of telecom applications where out-of-plane optical coupling is required. Our capabilities for custom product design and fabrication include:

  • 45 degree silicon mirrors
  • Vertical cavities
  • Silicon V grooves
  • Thin film metallization (typically TiW/Au and Al) of mirror facets
  • Solderable metal thin film stacks

Why Norcada?

Norcada, a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) product development company, has been serving clients since 2001 and delivering innovative products that are testaments to the company’s extensive industrial experience and capabilities in MEMS design and fabrication for sensors, X-ray and TEM analysis windows, and other commercial devices. Based out of Edmonton, Canada, Norcada has a state-of-the-art MEMS design, prototyping, and test facility. As they are located in one of the largest micro and nano technology clusters in North America, Norcada is able to offer a wide range of MEMS products including standard silicon and nitride membrane windows for the TEM microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy research community, silicon optical benches and MEMS mirrors for the telecom industry.

Norcada strongly believes in value creation for its customers through MEMS product innovation. Through its excellent access to local MEMS microfabrication facilities, Norcada has been able to provide cost-effective MEMS prototype development and small volume fabrication services to its clients throughout Europe and North America.

FAQ's about Silicon Optical Bench (SiOB)

Q: Do I have to design the entire unit myself?
A: No, Norcada requires only that you design the core concept and any waveguide structures used in your diagrams.

Q: Is my intellectual property (IP) protected?
A: Absolutely. Norcada takes the utmost care and attention to ensure that the intellectual property and account information of each of its clients remains private and secure. Norcada will only request information that is necessary to the design, assembly and testing of your silicon optical bench.
